Hickory, and the surrounding towns of Lenoir, Morganton, Newton, Conover, Granite Falls, Hudson and Taylorsville have felt the pinch of job loss in the manufacturing sector involving fine furniture and textiles. Although our economy is ranked fourth in North Carolina, it played a toll on the real estate market. This all started several years ago and is now showing signs of recovery. The topography of this area, known as the foothills, consists of mostly rolling hills that slowly transform in to mountain terrain as you travel north or west. Hickory is located off of Interstate 40 and travel to Charlotte or Winston Salem is about 45-60 minutes. If you wish to go to the mountains, that is an hour or less too. If the beach is what you want, it takes a little over four hours to reach Myrtle Beach.
The Unifour Area, comprising the counties of Catawba, Caldwell, Burke, Lincoln and Alexander, encompass the Greater Hickory Area. Although this 2000 square mile area has a population of over 425,000, it doesn't feel like a large metropolitan area. The largest cities of Hickory (pop 40,000), Morganton (pop 17,000), and Lenoir (pop 17,000) possess the modern conveniences of big cities. Real estate varies in this area from small neighborhoods comprised of bungalow and ranch homes to subdivisions with million dollar homes including golf courses, access to Lake Hickory (110 miles of shoreline), and more.
